Mike Murphy - Bass, Vocals

Gear:

Mike's main bass is a Fender LTD Aerodyne Jazz Bass, and his backup is a Line 6 Variax 700 Bass, both strung with Dean Markley Blue Steel strings.  He is running through a Line 6 BassPODxt Live preamp, to a Crown K2 Power Amp, and Gallien- Krueger's Neo 4x12 cab.  All cables are Monster Cable, power is supplied by Furman, and it travels in safety with its' SKB enclosure.

Musical influences include: U2, The Black Crowes, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Les Claypool, Flea, Victor Wooten, and Jaco Pastorius.

Lately I have been trying to listen to some of the newer bands coming out- I am interested in where things are going:  The Mars Volta, My Chemical Romance, The Killers, Postal Service, Deathcab, etc.  This, of course, is in addition to having 'Shake Your Money Maker' or Pearl Jam's 'Vs.' on permanent rotation in my CD player at work.

I recommend people try to listen to the KROQ as there are some really great new bands out there - you just have to dig a little.  For modern classics listen to anything Foo, Beck, or Chili Peppers; I do also love the Van Halen, as well as many other of the Cock Rock greats.   Oh, and U2 - listen to that all the time, it makes you a better person.

I don't recommend reading.  I do recommend The History Channel and the Discovery Channel- and I hear that Bill Nye the Science Guy is coming back…

How'd you get here?

I grew up in a band in Connecticut - in a van drinking 30 packs in the cold, and in clubs all over the Northeast.  'Coming of Age' was changing tires in the snow in Vermont in front of a cop with the uncanny ability to smell booze, telling my mom and dad that their son was moving 3000 miles away the week after he graduated college, and going from "hey, can my drummer join the band" to "are we playing Bonaroo next year, or what?"
